An Emmy and Telly award winning video storyteller at heart, Steve spent much of his career in TV news... mostly in Miami and Orlando.

It was love at first mic when Steve started professionally in radio at age 15 on WGMF, his hometown station in Watkins Glen, NY. From there it was a first foray into TV during college at SUNY Geneseo. While doing summer replacement fill-in at WENY radio, Elmira, he was asked to go to the TV side to fill in on weather. Then sports. Then on the anchor desk. The journalism bug bit hard during the legendary Summer Jam rock concert in the Glen in 1973. Being in the middle of a huge national story was exciting. A senior year internship at WROC-TV, Rochester, NY opened the door to an exciting run in TV news.

Steve spent 17 years reporting and anchoring news at WSVN & WTVJ, Miami and WESH & WFTV, Orlando. Highlights included live space coverage from the first shuttle launch on and foreign reporting assignments from Beirut, Lebanon, Israel, Central America and London. Wildfires, hurricanes, national political conventions, papal visits... it was a busy time.

An intrepid entrepreneur, Steve started and ran his own broadcasting business in the mountains of North Carolina building a radio station from scratch atop Beech Mountain, growing a station group, and renovating a TV station in Boone... launching and running news operations, station websites, and creative promotions along the way.

Then came a turn as Marketing Manager at Indiana's historic French Lick Resort.  Steve created and ran the video and audio production unit, becoming the face and voice of the resort.  His trademark historic storytelling became a major social media attraction online and helped the resort maintain contact with its loyal client base during the height of the pandemic.  Steve made numerous live TV appearances across the Midwest and MC'd the resort's major events.

Through it all he's been the face and voice of Drum Corps International since 1977.  A member of the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame, Steve hosted the championship broadcast on PBS for 26 years, then on ESPN. He's anchored live National Cinemedia shows annually in movie theaters across the country and hosted live streaming events online.  His love of marching music has made him a popular stadium announcer at band and drum corps shows across the country. (He also plays trombone with Festive Brass and the North Myrtle Beach Community Band.)

Steve is a passionate teacher.  He's an adjunct professor in the Communications Department at Coastal Carolina University, teaching journalism classes and recently creating a new class in Media Performance.  

ODDBALL FACTS:

Steve earned his Master of Science Degree in Mass Media Arts in December 2020... only 44 years after his BA.

Steve's on-camera cohost for the live five-hour broadcast of the 1980 DCI Championship on PBS was Rita Moreno,

Steve was once kissed onstage by Bill Cosby at the opening of the Orlando Arena.  (End of story.)

Favorite interview?  Paul McCartney.  (Amazing how many people wanted to help.)

Best lunch ever?  With Ronald Reagan in the East Room of the White House.  (Ask about the Mars story.)

Reporting passion:  Covering all things space from the advent of the shuttle program.  (If I couldn't be an astronaut...)

Best day on-air?  The space shuttle Discovery's return to flight post-Challenger when we were joined live by astronaut icons John Glenn and Wally Schirra.  (Thanks to a fortuitous run to the bathroom.)

Most fascinating foreign assignment?  Beirut, Lebanon on the heels of the first mass suicide bombing, which targeted our US troops.  (I learned a lot.)

Strangest occurrence:  Receiving a lightning caused electrical shock while preparing to do a live shot during Pope John Paul's mass in a Miami park. (I was not struck down.)

Best encounter:  When I thought baseball legend Ted Williams was going to chew me out and instead said, "Well God$%^&*, I've been wanting to meet you."  Likewise, Ted.  (It got even better from there thanks to Curt Gowdy.)
